The Artist - John Dixon
Creating order from chaos is an oft used metaphor yet it perfectly describes John’s artistic ethos. Our consumption based economy and poor waste management practices result in millions of tonnes of plastic entering the ocean every year. This causes untold harm to wildlife and the environment, and to humans. By using geometric patterns and mathematical sequences, John makes full use of the varied palette of colours and shapes of plastic fragments, all collected from beaches across southwest England. Some pieces are still recognisable, some are eroded by sea, sun, salt and the abrasion of rock and sand, often over many years. The beauty and order within the art draws the viewer in, like the mythical sirens, before the stark reality of our chaotic lifestyles’ dawns. We are our own destiny. Yet we have the power to change.
