The Artist - Alex Pickles

Alex Pickles, a wood sculptor in a family of printmakers and artists has spent much of his life working  in the countryside of the Cotswolds, North Yorkshire and Devon, Alex has spent many years  with wood in its various forms and types as a hedge layer, coppicer and Sculptor. It was whilst working in the wood with a forester as a teenager he witnessed the versatility of both wood and the chainsaw when the forester carved him a bird box from a fresh piece of pine. Working with responsibly sourced Oak he uses Chainsaws, power grinders and hand tools to get the final finish. He then uses stain to add some shade and  colour whilst still maintaining the look and feel of the wood. Alex’s recent Safari animal sculptures including this cheetah, offer a placement of exotic animals in the British landscape, creating an element of surprise, a second glance and a lasting pleasure.
